Patire 6.3 ASL to English

Context: This woman came to a community cooking class to teach them how to make curried goat. The class meets twice a month. There are 20 people in the class and one instructor. There is a Deaf couple in the class and 18 other hearing people. The instructor is also hearing. The students are between the ages of 25 and 50. They are there because they want to be, it is not a required class.

2. The gist of this selection is that this woman is explaining how to make curried goat, a Jamaican food. She tells how much meat is needed, other ingredients, spices, how to make red kidney beans with rice, a carrot juice drink, and a salad to make a delicious colorful meal.

3. Location of actors and objects. I did not set up a specific place, like that the stove was to the right, I just referred back to the stove, or if something was made and was not being used yet to push it to the side. It is a lot harder to set up a specific place where something is located in English. I think that referring to the stove or to put the food aside is equivalent because that is how we normal speak in English, and people who are listening have their own picture of where there stove, counters, and refrigerator are.

4. I think that concepts and relationship between concepts are mostly equivalent, in the beginning I did not see her specify that you needed 2 pounds of goat meat, I just saw the pounds needed, and it was not until later that I understood and said it was goat meat being seasoned and cooked. I think I was equivalent on which spices and foods go where and with what other food. For example, I said that the kidney beans and rice go together, and that the red kidney beans will bleed onto the rice and turn it red. I think that was a good example of an equivalent transfer of relationships between concepts. I did not do very well with this aspect when talking about her fathers restaurant..I missed a few finger spelled names/streets, or did not recognize the name/street name and how they related to each other. This would be a great time if I could ask for clarification.

5. I think I did maintain illocutionary force, there was not a wide range of different statements or questions, it was mostly just an explanatory and informative piece. There were also some rhetorical questions at the end and I felt that I transfered them equivalently, we dont use rhetorical questions often in English, but we do a little.

Overall thoughts:
  • I had a hard time with the fingerspelled words, they were street names and a persons name that I did not recognize. It is difficult for me to render fingerspelled words that I dont know, or dont know how to say.
  • I felt it sounded a little choppy, like piece by piece, but it was explaining a recipe and they usually go one step after another.
  • I felt I improved in getting away from ASL gloss, but it did show up in my interpretation at time.
  • I misunderstood that spinach and onion part. It was not two separate foods, spinach and onions, it is spinach onions. Which has a big effect on the transfer of the meaning because recipes are step by step and specific ingredients and if I am interpreting the wrong ingredients then the out come of the meal will be different.
  • I had a hard time with the end and understanding the streets and names she was talking about, which also had a big effect because it was explaining where something was and I did not interpret that correctly, meaning the consumers hearing the interpretation would not know how to get to the restaurant she was explaining.
  • Through out this interpretation I did my best to work on leaving enough time before rendering my interpretation so I have a whole, or mostly whole, thought and deleting ASL gloss/literal interpretation. These two things I need to work on. I felt I did get rid of some of these things and improved in some aspects, but the are still present in my interpretation.

Patrie 6.1 ASL to English

Study Questions:

  1. Context: This man came into an intro Criminal Justice college course to explain the basics of the criminal justice system. He works in this setting and is very knowledgeable about how the system works. There is 1 Deaf person in the class and 22 hearing students.
  1. The gist of the selection is about the 4 basics parts of the criminal justice system and explaining what they are. The four parts are: arrest phase, prosecution phase, arraignment phase in court, and the correctional aspect.
  1. I don’t think I represented the actors correctly, I did not understand or know who many of the people mentioned in this text are and what role they play. I tried to set up the criminal on my left side, but I know I mixed it up a few times.
  1. I do not think I did very well in relating concepts together. I had a hard time understanding this text as I was interpreting it. I recognized words and titles of people but I am not sure what all of their roles were and if I represented that correctly.
  1. I think that the illocutionary force was maintained but the man did not use a variety of it. He was just explaining stuff, and never asked questions. If he emphasized a point or something like that, it may not have been maintained.

Patrie 5.1 ASL to English

This man came into a high school history class. The class had been discussing the history of slaves and slave labor. The teacher brought in this man to present because there are two Deaf students in the class and thought it would be nice to have a presenter who was also Deaf. There are 28 other students who are hearing and the teacher is also hearing.

Interpretation of WTO

Study Questions:
2. Spacial Relationship: when the protesters were holding signs and where the protesters were set up compared to where the police were set up. In my interpretation I did set up that protesters were holding signs. I don't think I set up that the police were set up across from them, I said they were there, but I did not say where. 

3. Temporal Relationship: First there was a meeting in Seattle about the World Trade Organization, then they got together to make signs, then they protested, then there was chaos, then it was solved, and then there was controversy over whose fault it was for the riot starting. I felt these things were in my interpretation and preserved. Although they are in there I did not always find the best word choice to way to represent what was happening. 

4. Logical Relationship: When a riot started in the crowd of protester the police had to act to settle things down and keep it in control. In my interpretation this was preserved. 

5. Hypothesis: I had no idea what the WTO was until he expanded and said :WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION. So I did not have much of a schema to use for hypothesizing. After learning what WTO meant, I did not hypothesis that there was going to be a protest. When learning there was a protest, I did hypothesis that there was going to be a riot and it getting out of hand. 

Over All Thoughts:
  • The first attempt at interpreting this I had to stop after the first statement. I watched and gave myself enough time to get a whole coherent thought and where I was going with it, but as I started to interpret I totally lost everything he had said after. 
  • At times I used vocabulary that matched the speaker: police, strike, command, chaos (I think it fit at times).
  • At times I used vocabulary that did not match the speakers affect or spoke in ASL gloss: ummm, lousy pay, "did have a really good work ethics," these people (confusing on who I am referring to), chaos (riot may be a better word choice at times), hose plugged in, cops, gas guns (is that the correct name for it??)
  • I wanted to video tape myself to see what I look like when I am interpreting from ASL to English. I thought I did not do much external processing other than my eyes getting bigger or smaller, and my face showing confusing or nodding.

Patrie 5.3 English to ASL

Study Questions:

1. Context: This man came into a High School philosophy class to share his opinion and philosophers opinions and views on the definition of courage. There are 2 deaf students and 25 hearing students.

2. One example of a special relationship in this context is when the house kicks out two thieves, it shows where the house is and where they go after they are kicked out.

3.  There is an example of temporal relationship when the army of 10,000 is coming to the smaller army and city and the smaller army holds them back so the city can set up defense.

4. An example of logical relationship is the boy who faced his fear of the dark and over came it.

5. One hypothesis that was accurate was there would be a few different definitions of courage explained.

One hypothesis that was not accurate was that I did not know all of the examples he would use to explain courage.

Patire 4.1 English to ASL

Study Questions:

1. Context: The lady came to a Culture class at a University to talk about her experience in Hong Kong and this was the introduction story. There are 40 people in the class, 5 Deaf and 35 hearing. Most are college age and a few are non-traditional students. The Teacher is hearing so interpreters are always present in class.

2. Her and her husband had to stay in Anchorage Alaska on their way to Hong Kong because their plane had an emergency. The right engine caught on fire, so it was replaced and they made their way to Hong Kong the next day. 

3. After getting some feedback from a couple professors I tried to remember to wait enough before starting to sign so I get more of the meaning and where the speaker is heading. So I tried to do that, but I caught myself starting too early. I also have used this material before so it was helpful.

4. I used my memory and making sure I understood the meaning and where the speaker was headed with her story. And because I have used this text to interpret consecutively and simultaneously before it was helpful.

5. Her and her husband were traveling to Hong Kong and on their way to Japan before connecting over to Hong Kong there was an emergency that made them land in Anchorage Alaska at a cargo airport. After landing and evacuating the plane they saw that one of the engines were on fire. That night it was replaced and they all make their trip to Japan and then to Hong Kong.

Patrie 3.2 English to ASL

Study Questions:
1. Context:
This is a woman who came to a parenting class given at a Church. She is not involved in this group but attends the same church. The leader of the group asked her to come and speak about her childhood and her experience as a mother. There are 3 Deaf couples, and 11 hearing couples. They all have children between the age of 2 and 8. 

2. Yes, If I did not understand what the woman said in my source language I would not be able to accurately interpret it. But I did understand her so I am sure that helped me and give me a better ability to interpret it compared to if I did not understand her. 
Same with target language, if I did not understand it I would not be able to create a equal meaning, but I felt I did an ok job. 

3. There was one part, when she was talking about playing with her mom's pots and pans and I got behind, I think I got most of the information but I dont think I was totally clear on that part because it moved so quickly and I didnt have enough time to set it up clearly. The other processing part that I had a problem with was how to be clear about her mom and neighbor trying to help her get out of the steps.

Patrie 2.5 English to ASL

Study Questions:
1. Context: This lady is presenting shortly to a crowd of people before an auction begins about her hobby of collecting antiques. There is an audience of 50 people. 7 of them are Deaf and 43 are hearing. They are between the ages of 20 and 70.

2. Stress Levels: 2(some) -3(moderate)
I did not feel too stressed about this and when I missed something or got a little behind is when I got stressed out. For the most part I had worked with this text before and the things I did not understand the first time I understand now. 
3. Process Time: 3 (fair)
I thought I did a good job to give myself enough time to understand and process what the lady was saying. If I started too early I realized I needed to pause. 
4. Self-monitoring: 3 (fair)
There were a couple times I messed up and thought I made it clear but did not. I know I need to work on self monitoring and keeping it in the back of my mind. 
5. Resuming after falter: 2(fair) -3(good)
I felt I did pretty good on this. There were two specific times when I knew I messed up and had to fix it and I did my best to stay attentive to the continuing message and felt I did not miss the continued message. 
6. Accuracy: 3(fair)
I think my interpretation was pretty accurate and one thing I totally missed: brass rail lamp. I got the brass rail but I did not get that it was a lamp. I also missed the name of a reclining chair which is chaise lounge. But I felt I did a good job on being clear and accurate of what she was talking about.
